Sponsoring and windsurfing will always be connected to each other. Let me explain this to you. A  windsurfer starts with his sport as an amateur, just like every other person beginning with a sport. As soon as his or her level increases, he or she can probably join the RTC squad in The Netherlands or visit versatile races mostly abroad, they start rolling into the more professional side of windsurfing. You'll get educated and there are trainings and competitions in which you can take part in. But other than for example a young talented football player, things as materials, travel costs, match registration costs and high dues won't be payed for by the club or association for whom the windsurfer sails for and is a member of.  There is a big difference in available funds for windsurfers compared to, for example, professional football. As a windfoiler all costs are for your own account. Unfortunately in the watersport branche there is much less money that can be earned as a professional than in other sports branches, while the efforts of the athletes are almost equal or even higher compared to other top athletes. When you are a full-time athlete in this branch, it's difficult to keep your head up financially, and sponsors can help with that. 

Sponsors can contribute to making it possible for a windsurfer to just take that extra step, which may lead to victory at the end of the road. In return for the sponsor's contribution, there are various things that a windsurfer can offer back. This can be advertising, creating goodwill for the sponsoring company or being an ambassador of a company or foundation. Furthermore, there are countless opportunities for a company to gain a business advantage by sponsoring a professional windsurfer. The new windfoiling hype brought a number of interesting keywords that connects business and windsurfing.

When I founded the sponsor group 'Friends of Team Freerk Blom NED25' at the beginning of last year, our goal was to achieve the highest results together. The companies that, with their contribution as a 'friend', have ensured that I've, for instance became Dutch marathon champion, can be proud of this result because we did it together.
